National Student Exchange

NSE Overview

The National Student Exchange (NSE) is one of the best-kept secrets at Illinois State University. NSE allows Illinois State students to do the following:

  • Attend colleges and universities outside of Illinois State University
  • Receive Illinois State academic credit while attending other schools
  • Pay in-state tuition and fees for any exchange school
  • Explore graduate school and transfer school options
  • Broaden academic experiences
  • Gain intercultural experiences without leaving North America

Outgoing: for current ISU students who wish to study at another university

Incoming: for students from other universities wishing to study at ISU

NSE Highlights

  • Students can exchange to any one of nearly 200 schools located in the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, or Canada
  • Students may participate in NSE for up to one full academic year (including summer)
  • Many historically Black, Latino/a, and Native universities are NSE members
  • Most students who apply are accepted to attend one of their top-three schools
  • Classes taken on exchange will count toward Illinois State plans of study
