Life at Illinois State

Since Illinois State enjoys a diverse community, you have wonderful opportunities to befriend people from all over the world! We encourage you to enrich your life at ISU by becoming involved with events and organizations at ISU and in the Bloomington-Normal community.

International Friends Program

One of the most popular programs in the ISU community is "International Friends." Its purpose is to promote understanding by bringing international students and local families together for friendship and fun. You are free to spend as much or as little time together as you wish. International Friends do things together like: go to Chicago, share dinner, attend music or sporting events, see a movie, or just spend relaxed time talking and getting to know each other. The International Friends group also sponsors an ice-cream social, welcome dinners, a fall hotdog roast, an American folk dancing night, and guided nature walks. Being part of this program is a great way for you to learn about American life, and for local families to learn more about your culture and country.

If you would like to join International Friends, please complete an International Hospitality Form and give it to the International Studies Office. You will then be contacted by an International Friends volunteer. You may also learn more about International Friends by contacting International Friends Coordinator Shirley Koos at internationalfriends@hotmail.com.

International Women

If you are a female student, scholar, or the spouse of someone attending Illinois State, you are invited to join a group called, "International Women." This club makes it possible for women from other countries to meet once a month to share traditional food and customs, and visit places of interest. You can learn more about International Women by calling (309) 726-1394 or (815) 230-9017.

Student Organizations and Campus Clubs

In the United States, many American university students join social, academic and professional clubs. Belonging to a club can be a wonderful way to meet people who share your interests. Many students also enjoy making a positive impact in the lives of others by volunteering their time and talents to a good cause. There are hundreds of clubs at Illinois State that you may find worthwhile to join. View a list of campus clubs to learn more about them.

International Student Organizations

There are campus groups that represent a variety of cultures and countries. Many international students find this a valuable part of their ISU experience. Click here for a list of International Student Organizations.

Get Involved in Intercultural Events

ISU is pleased to host events throughout the year that celebrate other cultures and traditions. We hope you will feel excited to participate in these events!
